Life Just Gets Better, Don't It?

by

An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice; picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees. The pond was ideal for swimming, although he rarely did that anymore.

One evening he decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five gallon bucket with which to bring back some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.

One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or to make you get out of the pond naked."

Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

Crafty old chap now isn't he? This particular joke tickled my funny bone for quite a while. I love it and it makes me think he is not unlike a lot of folks who get to be considered the "older generation".

I think, because of his appreciation of life and for his quick witted mind he is finding life is better and better every day.

That's the picture I would like to paint today, one of life getting better and better as you age. It does, you know, if you let it. The operative words here are "let it". Wisdom sets in as a result of all your experiences. It brings with it a joy and happiness that is not founded on material goods or recognition from anyone. It lies within you and makes you happy just to be you.

The old saying that "Life is always good this side of the grass" is one born of wisdom and appreciation for life itself. It is not because one accumulates more wealth or is famous. It is because the years bring a wisdom and happiness that is centered inside and wants to get out to be spread to other people.

Be gracious and let that happen to you. They say the retirement years are the golden years. I am not exactly certain what that is supposed to mean but these years are most certainly golden and wonderful if you allow them to be. There is a feeling that wells up inside you giving you peace, contentment, joy and happiness unknown to any age previous. They are wonderful years and yet they still permit one to contribute, which, now, in itself, brings even more joy.

Look at these years as a reward. Envision them coming upon you as a pall of joy, of worthiness, completeness. In permitting that to happen you, too will discover ...
